Spotlight On: Fiber's & Fabrics Festival

PORT GAMBLE’S FIBERS & FABRICS FESTIVAL THIS WEEKEND

Here in Port Gamble, the beautiful bounty in our gardens won't bloom without a bit of April rain.
This weekend, we find reasons to love heading indoors during our first ever Fibers & Fabrics Festival on Saturday and Sunday, April 28-29.

The tulips may have started rising up in our garden beds but the swatches of yellows, reds and pinks will soon be decorating the interiors of Port Gamble’s three largest venues—the serene Hood Canal Vista Pavilion, old-fashioned Community Theater and the exquisite Walker-Ames mansion. All will showcase a blooming bounty of another kind: displays of world-class, lovely quilts--intricate and classic patterns-- hand-dyed fabrics, knits, crotchet art and felting, all handmade by those most talented and dedicated to their craft.

While you’re in town, look for clues to win our “Guess the Yards of Yarn” contest. The winner will receive a gift basket valued at $180 with loads of Port Gamble goodies.

Here’s the plan: Saturday 10AM-5PM and Sunday 10AM-3PM
Cost: This event is FREE!
  • Parking: Free parking is located in town with overflow parking available on the hill across from the historic Buena Vista cemetery.
  • Hood Canal Vista Pavilion: Displays of more than 30 quilts made by devout quilters residing in Poulsbo, Port Angeles, Sequim, Gig Harbor, Forks and Bainbridge Island.
  • Community Theater: Displays of assorted fabrics for anything quilting and sewing with the addition of demonstrations lead by the various local quilt guilds.
  • Walker-Ames Mansion: Look for inspiration for future projects by taking a look at various fleeces and fibers for weaving, spinning, knitting and even basket weaving.
Out here in Port Gamble, we love the outdoors but if we can't be outside due to the April Showers, we hope you will join us. Leave your umbrellas at the door and stay dry while celebrating our first ever Fibers & Fabrics Festival--a tribute to finding a reason to love having to be indoors.

Something New

Give Something New
SOMETHING NEW traditionally represents fresh beginnings and is a symbol of the things to come--what the bride will gain or receive in her future. Of course, way back when, this could mean status, family inheritance and future additions for the married couple.
SOMETHING NEW still symbolizes new beginnings to this day. Think of all the new beginnings and first times--first time home-buyers, first-time parents, first day of retirement, first-time grandparents. SOMETHING NEW represents hope for the future.

Ideas for SOMETHING NEW: the wedding gown, shoes, garter and our most recent favorite-- plantable wedding favors, seating arrangement cards and even thank-you cards. With these amazing and crafty items, the bride, groom and their guests can celebrate something new every time they see blooming wildflowers from their wedding!

Something Old

Choose something old.

SOMETHING OLD represents what a bride is leaving behind. First steps can always be a bit scary, so SOMETHING OLD is a bride's reassuring reminder that her family is with her as she takes her first steps toward her new life and family of her own.

Ideas for SOMETHING OLD: Anything owned by a grandparent (bride or the groom's side)--  a lacy hanky wrapped around the bridal bouquet, a piece of jewelry from a mother, a grandfather's pocket-watch or grandmother's locket. Don't be afraid to turn it into a DIY project--something of your own.

Happy Planning!

Spotlight On: Wind Wishes

Port Gamble welcomes a new business...
WIND WISHES in Port Gamble

Imagine this: Port Gamble's Camper Down Elm--
It's the middle of summertime and the tree's beautiful, leafy branches reach down around all sides.
Now, imagine it decorated with whimsical well wishes-- reminders of the love being shared and celebrated on your Wedding Day. These pretty paper banners flutter in the slight breeze coming up from the water. When they catch the eyes of your guests they present subtle reminders to LOVE, have JOY, embrace ROMANCE, or even hold a hand.

These wind wishes tie to anything--arbors, trees, wine bottles, wedding chairs --leaving a simple reminder to love the life you live, which is exactly the foundation of thought that went into WIND WISHES, now located here in Port Gamble!
"Master calligrapher Kaj Wyn Berry created these unique paper products in the early 1960's after reading historical accounts of asain railroad workers of the 1800's writing their wishes for a better life on strips of paper and hanging them in beach pines along the Oregon Coast.
"50 years later after 500 weddings, births, memorials and anniversaries, the demand for these simple hearfelt banners has exploded. This grass-roots tradition is ready to be shared with families throughout America."
-Gretchen Vilas, Editor of WIND WISHES blog

Helpful things to know by the day of your rehearsal

Designate a contact person
We know how precious your time is during your Rehearsal and Wedding Day. We don't want to bother you (Bride or Groom) with small details that may arise on your big day. We also realize (and no, it doesn't hurt our feelings) that you would rather see a family member, beautiful bridesmaid or trusted groomsman when a question does arise. So, please designate a contact so you may not have to see our "lovely mugs" so often ;)

Once you have entrusted that duty, make sure they know what their job will be and are comfortable with the responsibility. Introduce us to them the night of the rehearsal so we may gather any necessary information from them (mobile numbers are always helpful) and put-a-face-to-a-name.

Ushers, Reserved Signs and Special Seating
If you aren't using ushers but have special desires for who sits where during your ceremony, put some ribbon or reserved signs on the pews or chairs to signify they are held for closest family. This will make it easy for guests to see available seats and eliminates the stress of asking someone to move.
Traditionally, when looking at the ceremony  (whether it be taking place at an altar or under an arbor) the grooms side is to the right with the bride's side to the left. Ushers--typically close friends or groomsmen--help make guests feel special in finding seats for the ceremony. If there is no special seating wishes, a simple sign presents that message sweetly and gracefully.

She Said YES

The First YES
It starts the moment a gentleman realizes all his thoughts drift to one lady—distracted at work or out with the guys—it’s when he knows he wants to get to know her better. When he finds the courage to ask her on a date, he is ready to receive the first “Yes.”

The Second YES
When both this gentleman and his lady decide they only want each other for the rest of their lives. This is when the man will take his time in making sure everything is right. He looks at rings and plans the proposal. When the time comes to ask the question, he is ready to receive the second “Yes!”

The Third YES
It’s the wedding day—time for exchanging vows. The gentleman and his lady look each other in the eye and say “I Do”. This is the “Yes” they both have been anxiously waiting to hear since the first time they decided on forever.

Here at Port Gamble Wedding and Events, we are ready to help you get to the third “YES.” With our breath-taking venues, friendly staff and preferred vendors, we are ready to make your special day, a day you will never forget when you said “Yes!”
